Nathan Coulson

Machine Learning & AI Technologist, Digital Catapult

Nathan Coulson is a Technologist specialising in AI and Machine Learning. Nathan is the technical lead on Machine Intelligence Garage acceleration programme for AI startups and has a focus on the responsible adoption of AI. Nathan’s previous work in AI includes working with the Government of Portugal to build a prototype recommendation system for their employment department, as part of a Data Science for Social Good fellowship at Imperial College, and publishing his MSc thesis paper on “Adaptive microservice scaling for elastic web applications” in the IEEE IoT journal. Prior to transitioning to an AI & Machine Learning specialism, Nathan has also worked in project management and technical sales capacities for two startups in the EdTech (Insane Logic) and IT data visualisation (Squared Up) domains as well as for startup accelerators focusing on social entrepreneurship (UnLtd) and advanced digital technologies (Wayra). Nathan holds a MSc in Data Science from Birkbeck, University of London, and a BA in Economics and Politics from SOAS, University of London.

These technological developments are applied across many sectors and are used for significant benefits to firms, consumers, and society. Yet there is a wide range of ethical questions and concerns, from data bias to the importance of regulators. This session will explore the importance of ethics in AI, and will highlight the key issues including privacy, digital rights, and data management; bias and fairness; and transparency.
